However, physical distance between you (the client) and the hosting server can affect latency during tasks like SFTP uploads or SSH connections.
Can I restrict access to my hosting or website based on IP address?
Yes. In MyKinsta, you can block specific IP addresses or entire IP ranges using the built-in IP Deny tool. This feature helps prevent unwanted traffic such as bots or brute-force login attempts.
- Go to your site's "Security" section.
- Open the "IP Deny" tab.
- Enter the IP address or IP range you want to block, then click "Add IP."
You can use this tool to find your own public IP if you need to whitelist yourself. If your site uses Cloudflare (included with all Kinsta plans), you can also manage IP blocking and rate limiting from your Cloudflare dashboard.
Does IPv6 vs IPv4 matter for hosting?
Yes, but you don't need to worry about it much. IPv4 and IPv6 are two types of IP addressing. IPv4 is still most common, while IPv6 provides more addresses and better performance in some networks. Modern hosts like Kinsta support dual-stack IPv4/IPv6, so your site remains accessible regardless of which version your visitors use.
Why does my site's IP differ from what this tool shows?
This tool shows your browser's public IP address, while your website has its own server IP. If your site uses a CDN, load balancer, or reverse proxy, the IP visible to others will often be that intermediary's IP. This is perfectly normal and even beneficial. It helps improve performance and security by hiding your origin server.
