“We don’t design for awards, we design for revenue,” says Kim von Däniken, the company’s co-founder and Managing Director, “and we’re upfront with clients that this sometimes means making a decision that isn’t the flashiest one on the table.”

That message works for Beyondweb, which began moving clients to the Kinsta platform in 2024 and now manages more than 100 WordPress websites for Swiss SMEs across cybersecurity, sport and lifestyle, medicine and healthcare, finance, industry, and the non-profit sector.

The challenge: Keeping over 100 busy websites running reliably without hiring a sysadmin

Saying that Beyondweb has tested some other web-hosting companies is an understatement.

“Over the years we had worked with pretty much every major hosting provider in Switzerland, plus a handful of international ones, and the pattern was always the same,” von Däniken says. That pattern included control panels “that look and behave like they were designed 15 years ago,” no staging environments or advanced caching, out-of-date PHP versions, and extra fees for basic backup services.

“The bigger problem was support,” von Däniken says. “When something broke, you’d open a ticket and wait. Sometimes a day. Sometimes longer. That’s a difficult position to be in when you’re the agency and the client is calling you. We were absorbing reputational damage from infrastructure decisions we didn’t control and burning billable hours on sysadmin work our clients were never going to pay for.”

And then there were the performance issues. SEO is Beyondweb’s specialty, but sagging Core Web Vitals could stymie those efforts.

“We’d optimize a site down to the last kilobyte and still be fighting the server’s response time,” von Däniken says.

Finally, Beyondweb’s footprint in Switzerland came with client requests for in-country hosting that met Swiss data protection requirements. “For certain industries — healthcare, finance, anything touching sensitive personal data — the question of where the data physically sits is a real one, not an imagined one,” von Däniken says.

The solution: Kinsta’s intuitive hosting dashboard and a support team that’s all-in

Kinsta was recommended to Beyondweb by colleagues at an Austrian WordPress agency. Says von Däniken: “When we told them what we were dealing with, their answer was immediate and unambiguous: Stop testing hosts; go to Kinsta.”

The Beyondweb team first noticed Kinsta’s architecture was built for WordPress, with Cloudflare integration included rather than sold separately, staging environments standard, and automatic daily backups.

“None of these are exotic features; they’re just table stakes that almost nobody in the Swiss market was actually delivering,” von Däniken says.

Just as important as the features themselves is how easily Beyondweb can manage them through the MyKinsta hosting dashboard.

“For an agency managing dozens of sites, the dashboard is the product you actually touch every day,” von Däniken says, “and most hosting control panels are hostile to work in. MyKinsta was the first one where onboarding a new team member didn’t require a training session.”

The features built into the Kinsta platform and managed in MyKinsta allow “a dramatically simpler plugin stack,” von Däniken says. “Caching plugins, backup plugins, security plugins, CDN plugins, image optimization plugins — a whole category of tooling simply became unnecessary because the platform handles it.”

But what stood out the most for Beyondweb was Kinsta’s approach to customer support.

“Every time I’ve had a problem, I’ve been helped,”  von Däniken says. “And, crucially, I’ve been helped even when the problem clearly wasn’t Kinsta’s responsibility. Nobody hands you off. Nobody closes the ticket to protect an SLA metric. For a five-person agency without a dedicated ops team, having that level of support behind us is effectively an extra colleague.”

What’s more, Kinsta gives Beyonweb the option to locate customer sites in a Zurich data center.

The result: WordPress managed so efficiently that an agency’s business was transformed

The features built into the Kinsta platform allowed Beyondweb to cut the number of plugins on its own website by 50% and across all customer sites by about 30%.

“Every plugin you remove is one less update to manage, one less compatibility conflict, one less attack surface, and one less license to pay for,” von Däniken says.

The efficiencies gained by moving to Kinsta encouraged Beyondweb to take on more work, including maintaining some 40 websites operated by another agency.

“It actually changed our business,” von Däniken says of the deal, which required Beyondweb to migrate and reliably run the entire portfolio. “We won it because we could point to Kinsta as the platform underneath.”

Beyondweb is now reporting Google PageSpeed scores in the 90-to-100 range across many client projects.

“What matters commercially is that we can now make performance a selling point in pitches rather than a caveat,” von Däniken says.

And the Zurich data center? “There’s a widespread assumption here that only local providers can meet Swiss data protection requirements,” von Däniken says. “Being able to say ‘hosted in Zürich’ ends that conversation quickly and lets us get on with discussing the actual project.”

What was learned

Not everything Beyondweb learned from the move to Kinsta was anticipated.

Kinsta’s ISO 27001 certification, SOC 2 compliance, Cloudflare-backed firewalling, and other security enhancements weren’t key motivators for Beyondweb’s hosting choice, but it has since won a cybersecurity company as a client.

“If you’ve ever pitched to a cybersecurity firm, you’ll know they audit your infrastructure choices properly rather than taking your word for it,” von Däniken says. “Kinsta held up to that scrutiny.”

Also, says von Däniken, “For years we treated hosting as a cost line to be minimized, and we were wrong. Hosting is the foundation your entire client relationship sits on: if it fails, it fails publicly, it fails on your name, and no amount of good design or good SEO compensates for it.”

“The difference between cheap shared hosting and managed WordPress hosting is not a difference in price per gigabyte — it’s a difference in how many hours a month your team spends firefighting instead of doing billable work. Once you look at it that way, the calculation is not close.”

Kinsta didn't just make our WordPress work faster — it made client mandates possible that we simply couldn't have taken on before.
