What Makes Kinsta the Best Green Hosting?

Kinsta’s green hosting powers tens of thousands of websites across the internet, from personal projects to massive enterprises and online stores. All of that is possible thanks to our state-of-the-art technology and our integration with the Google Cloud platform.

Kinsta is Green Hosting

Despite that powerful infrastructure, we’re proud to say we’re a green hosting company. We use Google Cloud Platform and Cloudflare to power our hosting infrastructure, which means your websites run on 100% renewable energy.

Beyond that, we try to reduce carbon emissions at Kinsta as much as possible, so we can minimize the impact of all our services on the environment. At the same time, your websites are still powered by top-of-the-line technology to ensure performance and security.

Why We Use Google Cloud Platform

There are a lot of reasons why Kinsta is powered by Google Cloud. Thanks to our partnership with Google, we can provide you with hosting services that deliver unmatched performance. When you combine that with our 10+ years of experience in hosting and optimization, you get a powerful combination.

However, it’s also important to note that for years now, Google has bought enough renewable energy to match 100% of its electricity use around the world. Google Cloud is possible thanks to multiple types of renewable energy, from solar to wind power.

There’s no way around the fact that data centers consume massive amounts of electricity. However, on average, Google data centers use about 50% less energy than other options. By working with a company that seeks to minimize its carbon footprint, we can reduce the impact that our websites have on the environment.

Google’s data centers use much less energy than the typical data center. They raise the temperature to 80°F, use outside air for cooling, and build custom servers.

Although many people aren’t aware of it, the internet as a whole accounts for around 2% of global carbon emissions. By the ‘internet’, we mean data centers, mobile devices, personal computers, telecommunications networks, and every other element that makes it possible for websites to run and for users to access them.

Google invented more efficient ways to cool its data centers and invested heavily in green energy sources, with the goal of being powered 100 percent by renewable energy.

When compared to five years ago, Google now gets about 3.5 times the computing power out of the same amount of energy, and continues to make many improvements each year.

Green hosting doesn’t always translate to best-in-class performance and features. With Kinsta, though, you get a service that is environmentally friendly and doesn’t compromise when it comes to performance.

Why We Use Cloudflare

Cloudflare is one of the world’s leading providers of website security and performance services. In fact, Cloudflare is currently being used by over 7 million websites! At Kinsta, all plans come with a free Cloudflare integration, which includes an enterprise-level firewall with DDoS protection and high-performance CDN. Powered by edge locations in almost 200 cities worldwide, our Cloudflare integration helps to ensure our infrastructure is as fast and secure as possible.

Not only does Cloudflare offer some of the best performance and security products for websites, they do so with a strong focus on minimizing negative environmental impact. In addition to committing to carbon neutrality by 2022, Cloudflare has announced a plan to purchase carbon credits to offset emissions from the past 11 years.

To achieve their goal of 100% renewable energy usage, Cloudflare will be ramping up deployment of “hyper-efficient servers” powered by ARM CPUs. Compared to existing servers, the new ARM servers will provide the same performance with 50% less power consumption. Furthermore, Cloudflare’s “Green Compute” program will allow users to run Cloudflare Workers scripts exclusively on sustainable hardware (powered by 100% renewable energy).

The Internet is responsible for approximately 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year—roughly comparable to the annual CO2 emissions of the entire aviation industry worldwide. Now any Internet property on Cloudflare’s network—which today already consists of 17 percent of the web—will automatically reduce emissions and seamlessly contribute to a greener, more sustainable world.

By hosting your site on Kinsta with our Cloudflare integration enabled, you can take advantage of best-in-class security and CDN performance without compromising on being environmentally friendly.

How Kinsta Works to Reduce Carbon Emissions

While our partnership with Google Cloud plays a big role in reducing carbon emissions from our services, we take additional measures to minimize the overall impact we have on the environment as well.

The most efficient way to reduce your website’s carbon footprint is by improving its overall performance. By optimizing data transfer and reducing page sizes, we can minimize your website’s impact.

At Kinsta, we do this for every single client on each one of our plans. By offering free built-in caching, we reduce the number of times that users need to load pages. Additionally, by integrating a Content Delivery Network (CDN) with all our plans, we help you optimize delivery for visitors from around the world.

The more efficient your website is, the less impact it has on the environment. Kinsta’s services are built to provide unmatched performance. Best of all, that performance boost also translates to greener services.

Kinsta’s Company Culture

The way Kinsta operates aligns perfectly with the goal of reducing our environmental impact.

Kinsta’s team is remote. That means we don’t have a massive headquarters with hundreds of offices, filled with equipment that consumes astronomical amounts of electricity. Our employees don’t have to commute every day, and we generate less waste, including office supplies, prepackaged food, and more.

Our company is committed to reducing the impact that web hosting has on the environment. By using Google Cloud, optimizing your websites to reduce data transfer, and minimizing our own impact, we can provide you with best-in-class green hosting services!
